http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=2293 does a good job of identifying problems with the current model, and provides some food for thought when importing 4GAI-style improvements.

http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=4257 contains a helpful table of probabilities, and also raises the issue that +speed gives an in-built bonus to stealth (because monsters get fewer chances to wake up). I have suggested subtracting (speed - 10) / 3 from the stealth calc to compensate for this. In fact it would need to be (speed - 3) for a smooth progression, and only if speed > +0.
