Add Mac OS X support to configure.ac and version.sh support to the Mac build

Description

Remove the need for Makefile.osx by allowing Mac users to run autogen.sh/configure/make. Also add support for version.sh to the Mac build.

please don't take away my makefile.osx, I hate autoconf...

Fair enough. Then the goal is at least to make Makefile.osx work the same as the autoconf build. Right now, it doesn't incorporate the git version into the build, and it doesn't compute dependencies automatically.

As of 41e55f7 in staging, Makefile.osx knows about git versions and unit tests. It doesn't compute dependencies automatically, though. Adding OS X support to the autoconf toolchain will be trickier, as that toolchain's buildsys make snippets are somewhat inflexible about executable building.
