My testing didn't find sound as described, but it did seem to be patchy - there would be fights with no sound for no obvious reason.

I have no problem in PWMAngband where I have slightly modified the Term_xtra_win_sound() function to use an array [MSG_MAX][SAMPLE_MAX] of pDevice and only do the "Open command" bit if the pDevice corresponding to the current sound has not already been opened. This also allows to cancel the current sound if another sound is about to be played.
