At the moment, they're pretty rubbish, so rework them such that they're not.

I think that all criticals, bow or melee, should depend upon how much higher your hit roll is than it needs to be, and get rid of weapon weight from the calculation. Then fighters would get more/better crits because they are more skilled, and +50 to hit would pay off with crits too. Unfortunately, I have not been able to come up with a good formula.

Happy to experiment with this in my towards-O-combat branch for 3.3. I agree with Eddie that the quality of hit should be the main factor, but the weapon quality should also feature and so should the weapon's size (weight or base dice). IMO the balance should be roughly 60% hit quality/skill, 20% weapon quality, 20% weapon size.

http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=3946 contains a possible algorithm by Derakon, and some discussion. This should definitely follow the separation of AC into evasion and absorption.

[7dda9e9] Now uses finesse/balance and prowess/heft, which in turn are related to class and clev (but not yet race, IIRC). Weapon weight is gone completely. We didn't, in the end, make any connection with the to-hit roll.
