Hmmm. The 3.3.0 release thread has some disturbing anecdotal evidence about high AC gimping monster melee. It's probably time to do a spreadsheet. That may indicate some tinkering opportunity for 3.3 (though complete replacement of the formula should wait until 3.4 or later).

Jens kindly fixed the AC problem in [r02de916], but this only solves the immediate issue for 3.3.0, it doesn't make the formula more intuitive. That's part of the combat rework.
