#866 closed change (wontfix)

Tunneling should damage normal weapons

Milestone: Triage Keywords: items

Description

Tunneling with a non-digging weapon should damage it progressively.

Tunneling should roll 1d15: the weapon takes damage.

a roll 1d20 provides the ranges for type of damage:
1-7: to-hit reduced by 1d2

8-14: to-Dam reduced by 1d2

15-17: to-hit and to-dam reduced by 1d2 each

18: to-hit and to-dam reduced by 3d2 each

19: if (dice > 1) reduce dice by 1 else same as 20

20: if (size of dice > 1) reduce size of dice by 1 else heavily curse weapon.

This would make players hesitant to tunnel with that Holy Avenger.
#20 would make digging with a great hammer, not recommended.

Additional caveats: Some high level weapon artifacts should be given minor digging abilities. FREX Nimthanc with a pure fire blade, should be better at digging than a metal blade, and should not be harmed by digging. Narthanc on the other hand, with its pure ice blade, isn't going to be better at digging than a normal weapon but shouldn't be harmed from digging either.

If some of the high-end, end-of-game level weapons have minor digging abilities (+1), then that frees up an inventory slot and reduces the weight burden, while simplifying tunneling.

(trac does not like CRLF).

Whilst I appreciate this would make people less likely to tunnel with good weapons and is thus more realistic, the gameplay effect overall is to make the game more annoying with no benefit, and as a result, I won't be implementing it.

(I'd also appreciate it if you could open substantive gameplay change requests over on the forums instead of here, where the entire community can comment and discuss.)

Not annoying, harder. There is a substantial difference.
I think players should expect some semblance of realism.

I disagree completly with this philosophy. Almost every major change from way back when 'Angband' was 'Moria', has been to make the game easier, and this has only accelerated in recent years[*]. Gameplay changes should not all be going in one direction. Improvements that make the game easier, should be balanced by improvements that make the game harder (notice how I suggested both?) Other than curse item scrolls and some minor disenchantments, what can damage any decently good item from the game? Nothing. I think this philosophy goes against what the original creater of the game (RAK) intended, as he said and I'm paraphrasing that he kept making the game harder and harder and nearly unbeatable, in fact at one point didn't he proclaim it was unbeatable, and when someone did it he added that player's character to the game as the Evil Iggy?

  • Too numerious to list fully. From stacking of every thing, charge sharing of wands/staves, the Black Market, unbalanced artifacts, Etc. Getting rid of features that have been with the game from the beginning, like haggling. This isn't even getting into the virtually useless additions like chaos and nether, which are essentially autokill attacks whose sole purpose is to keep players searching for artifacts/ego items with those resistances and not advancing down the dungeon.

I don't care to create forum accounts for every site on the internet, especially for minor improvement suggestions. Perhaps when I get to the Major improvement suggestions, after I beat this version, I'll consider it.

I would very much appreciate you not making feature requests here and rather doing it on the forums or on the newsgroup. This tracker is not the place for substantive gameplay change requests.
