auto-inscription prevents stacking of arrows

This has happened to me twice. I fire all of some arrows and then when I go to pick them up, the first one on the floor is inscribed {excellent} even though it was previously identified. The rest on the floor (on different squares) are not inscribed. When I pick them up, the auto-inscription stays attached to the first one preventing stacking. This is angband 3.1.0 beta downloaded 01/22/09. I would attach a savefile demonstrating this problem if I knew how to. Unfortunately, there is no "attach file" button here.
