Re-designing combat in Angband-v4

There's a pretty good consensus that there are some fundamental design problems with V's current combat model:

  • plusses to damage (from any source) are more powerful on light weapons than on heavy weapons
  • there's no distinction between on-weapon and off-weapon damage boosts
  • there's no distinction between weapon weight and weapon speed
  • there's no distinction between avoiding damage and withstanding it
  • the effects of STR and DEX on combat are identical for every weapon, and classes are insufficiently distinct
  • the whole critical hit system just doesn't make sense
  • the launcher multiplier makes damage plusses inconsistent (worth more in bigger launchers)
  • thrown weapons aren't anywhere near viable
