Method for detecting some cheating

Reported by: kzk Owned by:
Milestone: Triage Keywords: Cheating

Simple Method for detecting a certain class of Cheating:

  1. Create a new flag in the savefile.
  1. At new game this flag is set to zero.
  1. At Game Save this flag is set to zero.
  1. At game start this flag is incremented by one and saved immediately (no other changes to save files.
  1. If the flag goes above 4, cheating is highly suspected and should be marked in the save file.

It should be noted that this is only a simple metric to determine that a player is intentionally restarting over and over again (crashing the program then restarting) in order to game some RNG effect. It is possible to believe that a computer crashed normally, even twice in a row is not that suspicious, but three or four times in a row and something suspicious is going on.

It's an idea, but the game has never tried to police cheaters and I don't intend to make it start. If people want to cheat, they can knock themselves out.

Eh...more precisely, policing cheaters was removed in V after it was proven mostly ineffective. The binary releases of Hengband for DOS/Windows being a reasonably object demonstration of this ineffectiveness.
